Focus on the Groups
Group A
Wang Liqin, Chen Weixing, Jean-Michel Saive, William Henzel
Wang Liqin was unable to answer the question: “Who is your most dangerous opponent?” The reason is perhaps because the Chinese player is the big favourite for the World Cup. Defender Chen Weixing and Jean-Michel Saive, adored by French public, will be ready to threaten the best player in the world and Chen Weixing has beaten Wang Liqin on the ITTF Pro Tour in 2006.
Group B
Timo Boll, Vladimir Samsonov, Kalinikos Kreanga, El-Sayed Lashin
Timo Boll will have to play at top level because he faces Vladimir Samsonov, a player who has already won the World Cup twice and beat Boll in the group stage one year ago. Furthermore, Kalinikos Kreanga is a dangerous opponent, the year 2006 has not been one of his best but the Greek may spring a surprise. “This group is very hard to me; I will have to be at my best to qualify”, said Timo Boll. “For the past month, I’ve been practising a great deal but to win I’ll have to be in excellent form; being very good will not be enough.”
Group C
Ma Lin, Werner Schlager, Patrick Chila, Liu Song
Nothing is impossible in sport it’s just some tasks are harder than others and although Patrick Chila starts as an outsider, the home crowd might just give him the spur he needs. Ma Lin has already won the World Cup three times and Werner Schlager really loves Paris! He became World Champion at Bercy three years ago. “I feel very good”, said the Austrian player. “I am very happy to come back to Paris, even if playing in Bercy would have been better for me”.
Group D
Wang Hao, Chuan Chih-Yuan, Damien Eloi, Bence Csaba
Damien Eloi, who was surprised to be invited, is determined to play well in the Liebherr World Cup. However, he will have to play at a very high level to beat Chinese star Chinese Wang Hao and the fast Chuan Chih-Yuan of Chinese Taipei. Meanwhile, Damien Eloi, like Patrick Chila, will want to avoid Timo Boll and Vladimir Samsonov. Tough matches for Damien Eloi and Patrick Chila but for the French players, it is a good draw.
