When Ma lin was still little, he never thought of winning any titles. During 2 hour argument, wu pointed out all the good things of ma lin and cai pointed out all the bad things of ma lin. It was all down to who had a better record between the players. In the end, liu guozheng’s record was slightly better than ma lin’s. WU was very sad and he told ma lin. Ma lin was crying in his room. He couldnt play well during that time. He called his mother one night and was considering quiting the national team. His mother was very sad but Ma lin said he still has not deicded and cried all night. During the morning, ma lin called his mother back and siad he wasnt gonna quit and being the best practice partner he could be would make him feel like he contributed making china take home some medals. In men’s doubles, there was a dilemma, before, there were only 2 teams that were very very good that left the other teams in its ashes. This time, there was ma/chen, wang/kong and wang/yan. The only way to decide was through a final round robin. All 3 teams pretended like this was the olympic gold medal match. Coach Wu would always cheer on ma/chen and cai would walways cheer on the opposite team. In the end, ma/chen came in first. Since then, ma/chen hasnt been doing well toghether so it effected ma lin’s singles a bit, but he was more than ready. During the olympics, in the match between waldner and ma lin, waldner won the first game and since then, ma lin was afraid to play his best which led to his lost in the second game. From their, he felt he coundlt win and he lost that match. That lost would haunt him for the rest of his life and with wang/kong out and malin down and chen qi nexperienced, the chinese team wasnt sure if ma/chen could win. Ma lin said that there were 3 days left before the men’s doubles ended and he wasnt sure if he could fininsh it. It was a path he was not sure he could walk down. When he did win, he was so happy he cried. During his match with waldner, after he lost the first 2 games ma’s mom siad it was okut she was sad. When ma lin was playing waldner, he claimed that his sponge was a millimeter too thick. Ma lin worried and he eventualy lost. Beofre hte match he thought he would have no problem even with the sponge accicdent, but after he lost the first game, he started to play too carefuly and was too worried. In ma lin’s mind, singles was more important than doubles and without the 2004 men’s singles gold medal or even a medal at all, he felt he wouldn’t be able to play another olympics so he was very sad about it.
